My lil Entry Way

I redid my lil entry way bench, in an awning stripe ( I know, big surprise.)
Here's the before:
And today with the new upholstery, and some explanations:

I AM debating on painting those stairs white, like this:
My only hesitation is the wood is 101 years old. The color is real, so if I hated the white, I'm kinda screwed :)

What are your plans for the house? If you're going to be there for a very long time I would consider doing it. However, there is a part of me that gets sad at the thought of painting that wood. Is it in good shape? If not, that would push me towards doing it.

I'm rambling but you can see I share your dilemma!

Try white contact paper or even fabric to see how you like it/as alternative?

I think it'd look good :o) The risers in our house were painted brick red (must have been on sale, that paint, back then) so I had no qualms about painting over it but I do understand your dilemma ...

I do plan on being here atleast 5 more years if not way more. The fronts are not in good shape, so I would be sanding a bit, which is no big deal. Emily I'll be interested to hear if you do this too!

The striped fabric is fresh and crisp looking. White stair fronts would also echo the stripe on the fabric.

Painting the stair fronts won't make or break a real estate sale. It sure would brighten up that stairwell. The white contact paper idea is a good one, just to see if you'd really like the white stair fronts.

I just discovered your blog from over at Centsational Girl and am your newest follower! Love what I've read so far.
I hear ya on painting old wood. My 1st house was built in 1885 so I understand your dilemma.

We painted ours...and while I like the look, they scuffed up quickly! I've been thinking of trying a contact paper or wallpaper concept next! (btw, I think brightening up those stairs would look GREAT!)

As far as the white scuffing it will clean up easily with magic eraser! I'm leaning towards thinking you should go for it. I already have it in our home.....I just meant I feel your dilemma b/c I couldn't decide what you should do either! ;)

Actually magic eraser would totally ruin the finish....so I won't do that. Thanks little house for the contact people idea!

I'd paint it because it will illuminate the space. Nate would tell you to cut some foam core board or very thin plywood and paint that, apply with Velcro and see how you like it before it becomes permanent. Stripping stairs, especially with the patina you're talking about, would be impossible. But brightening up the space would be incredible. Jo @ Let's Face the Music

Where did you get that black and white poster with all the NY streets? I am from NY and would love something like that in my house!

I have found a couple of stairs painted white with a design that you might like. I had pinned them to my boards on Pinterest. Here's one: http://pinterest.com/pin/84794405453958467/
and the other:

there is another I saw and thought I had pinned but cannot find it.

I wouldn't paint them. But then again, I'm very sentimental towards old wood.
